Grazewell Member expectations

Peer to Peer Meeting and Educational Events

Attend 4 peer to peer meetings and/or educational events per year. For 2026, there are already two events listed on the Opportunities page. There will be several more events available. The list will be updated monthly. Withers Ranch will host the first ORECAL Grazewell group ranch tour this summer. Details soon. Proof of your participation in these events must be submitted by December 1, 2026.

2026 Grazing Plans

2026 Grazing Plans are due March 1. Resubmit your 2025 plan if nothing has changed, or contact your ORECAL peer leader for assistance with your 2026 plan. Example grazing plans can be found on the Resources page.

Plans must include goals, cattle movements, and a drought contingency plan, and should incorporate monitoring results and learnings from annual observations.

Plans may be uploaded to the Grazewell "Field Maps" app or submitted to Peer Leaders.

On-Site Monitoring & Soil Sampling (Every 5 Years)

Conducted July–December by Northway Ranch Services (NRS) in partnership with the producer. Most of you already had this completed. Ranchers choose 5 sites known as Management Learning Locations (MLLs) and work with Northway to establish baseline monitoring and set management actions at these sites.  Some ranches may be re-monitored at 3–4 years to balance geography, budget, and staff capacity. The CNB Program Manager (DelRae Ferguson) coordinates initial and re-monitoring with you.

After baseline monitoring, Northway will assign you a username and password to a website known as your Grazewell Hub." Here, you will find maps, monitoring data from your ranch, soil testing results, and more.

If you become a Grazewell participant July 1 or later, you may may complete baseline monitoring the following year during the normal monitoring season. All other deadlines still apply.

Annual Observations (Every Year)

Each year, you will conduct an Annual Observation at each of your MLL sites. This is not the same thing as your initial monitoring and 5-year monitoring activities. This is a simple survey and photo taken and submitted through the "Field Maps" and "Survey 123" apps on your phone or tablet. Try to pick a seasonal time on your ranch (i.e. e.g., haying, pre-turnout, end of grazing season) to conduct your annual observations.

Go to the Resources page to find out how this works!

It is also a good time to evaluate your management actions at each site. Did you accomplish any of them, do you need to set new ones, etc.?? You should record changes in your future grazing plans as well.
